Learning to use computers is like learning a new language. Along with the new vocabulary and skills, you will inevitably acquire some new ways of thinking about and interacting with the world. Even if all you \learn to do is plug in the cumputer and compose letters, the computer may change your writing process, y making it much easier to revise what you've written.

Learning about computers will also give you access to new ways of obtaining and working with information. After you know how to operate a computer, you can easily use it to chat with people accross the country or the globe, about everything from international politics to recipes for bouillabaisse to Chinese word processing progeams. If you have an office job, computer literacy may enable you to carry out some of your work from home- letting you communicate with the office computer using your own computer and a telephone. Finally, you may gain glimpses of what the future will be like, when computers are to be even more ubiquitous and more capable than they are today.

Today computers are everywhere. Both large and small business use computers for everything from work processing and book keeping to desktop publishing. Computers are used at home for personal finance, correspondence, education, entertainment, and more. Because computers have become inexpensive to make, they have also become a part of many products we buy. Special purpose computers are usually made to carry out a specific task, whereas other computers are made to be programmed for a variety of tasks.
